With so much hype and negative light shed on keratin hair treatments and the use of formaldehyde, we decided to dive into the effects of the substance and get the facts instead of listening to the media blow up about the use of formaldehyde and it’s cancer causing ways.
What is Formaldehyde?
A colorless strong smelling chemical that is used in all kinds of building materials and household products like cleaners. It is also readily available in the air your breathe on a daily basis because it occurs naturally in the environment.
Where Can Formaldehyde Be Found
Formaldehyde is a metabolic product of living cells so it is naturally ocurring but is also man made in large quantities. In fact over 6 billion pounds of formaldehyde are produced yearly.
It is an excellent preservative, resin and binding agent.
It can be found indoor and outdoors:
- Cigarette smoke
- Wood smoke
- Automobile exhaust
- Power plants
- Natural gas (kerosene)
- Particle board
- Wood paneling
- Mobile homes (motor homes)
- Paper products
You know that frog you dissected in high school? Yes it was soaked in formaldehyde which is why it had quite the pungent smell. The truth is formaldehyde gas is everywhere you go on a daily basis you just didn’t realize it.
Does Formaldehyde Cause Cancer?
According to Cancer.gov “formaldehyde is present in indoor and outdoor air” and there is no documented long term effects of formaldehyde and Cancer. On laboratory tests performed on rats they concluded that formaldehyde could (not does) cause nasal cancer in lab rats.
As a result formaldehyde has been classified as a known carcinogen though only some studies have only SUGGESTED it causes cancer in humans
The short term effects include:
- Watery eyes
- Nasal irritation
- Skin irritation

We believe in a safe environment for all including and especially our staff. So we take measures to ensure that the air you breathe is as clean as possible (air purifiers). We simply wouldn’t perform this treatment if we thought it was too hazardous to our clients (there are too many keratin products out there).
In reality it would be more hazardous to our staff performing the procedure because they are standing over your head in direct contact.
You be the judge if 90 minutes, 3 or 4 times a year is just too much formaldehyde exposure for you to handle. If it is then we have an alternative solution:
